Rongai Route

The Rongai Route, starting on the northern side of Kilimanjaro, is drier than other routes, making it ideal during the Wet Season. Although less scenic, it offers a gradual gradient, well-spaced camps, and ample time for acclimatization. With fewer trekkers, it feels wilder, and wildlife sightings are possible. The terrain is gentle yet rocky from day three, and the shortened stage before summiting provides a welcome rest. The descent follows the Marangu Route, taking up to 2 days. The route covers 74 km over 6-7 days and has an 85% success rate.

ITINERARY

DAY - 1

Airport pick-up- Drop off at Hotel

The staff from Tenebo Adventures will pick you up at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer you to your accommodation in Moshi. Upon arrival, you will receive a brief orientation for the upcoming climb. Your gear and necessary equipment will also be checked to ensure everything is in order for the adventure ahead.

DAY - 6

Summit Day

The hike from Kibo Hut (4730m) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) and then to Horombo Hut (3705m) is one of the most challenging and rewarding days. The ascent takes about 7 to 8 hours, while the descent takes 6 to 8 hours. The total distance is approximately 5.4 km up to Uhuru Peak and 15 km down to Horombo.

The day begins at around 23:20, with a brief tea and biscuit before starting the climb. The first section involves a rocky path leading to Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), a good spot for a rest. From there, the trail zigzags steeply up to Gillman’s Point (5681m), located on the crater rim, requiring significant physical and mental effort. This is the most demanding part of the journey, as you encounter stone scree and a steep incline. From Gillman’s Point, you may encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

At the summit, you can enjoy the stunning views and take photos, weather permitting. Afterward, we descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night. The descent to Horombo takes about 3 hours and feels surprisingly quicker than the ascent. In the evening, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and rest after a long, rewarding day.

DAY - 5

Mawenzi Tarn Camp - Kibo hut

After breakfast, we begin our hike from Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4303m) to Kibo Hut (4730m), covering a distance of approximately 9 km over 5 hours. We ascend on the east side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Once at Kibo Hut, we rest and prepare for the final ascent, which will begin around midnight. The rest of the day is spent recovering and gathering strength for the challenging summit push. We overnight at Kibo Hut in anticipation of the climb ahead.

DAY - 4

Kikelewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Camp

We embark on a short but steep 3.7 km climb from Kikelewa Cave (3679m) to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4303m), which takes about 3 hours. As we ascend the grassy slopes, we are rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness. The vegetation zone fades as we approach the camp, located beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. After reaching Mawenzi Tarn, we spend the afternoon acclimatizing and exploring the stunning area, taking in the dramatic landscape around us.

DAY - 2

Rongai Start Point (1996m) – Simba camp (2626m)

We depart from Moshi and drive for 45 minutes to the Marangu Park Gate for registration. From there, we continue on a rough road for about 2 ½ hours, covering 68 km to the Rongai starting point (1996m) at Naro Moru. Our hike begins from Nale Moru village, where the winding path first crosses maize fields before entering a pine forest. The trail is relatively gentle, offering a scenic and easy hike through the countryside. We’ll camp at Simba Camp (2626m) for the night, which has basic facilities including a public toilet, a wooden table, and benches, but no hut.

DAY - 3

Simba Camp - Kikelewa Camp

On day three, We hike from Simba Camp to Kibo (3482m), covering a distance of approximately 11.8 km over 6-7 hours. Our first stop is at First Caves, 5.8 km into the trek, where we enjoy lunch. Afterward, we continue our ascent and reach Kikelewa Camp at around 3679m. This camp offers stunning views, including a stream of water flowing below the cave, making it a scenic and peaceful spot to rest.

DAY - 7

Horombo Hut - Marangu Gate - Moshi

After breakfast, we begin our 6-hour descent from Horombo Hut (3705m) to Marangu Gate (1860m), covering a distance of approximately 19.7 km. Along the way, we pass Mandara Hut and continue down through the lush moorland and montane forest. Upon reaching Marangu Gate, climbers who successfully reached the summit will receive their certificates. Those who reached Gillman’s Point (5685m) will receive a green certificate, while those who made it to Uhuru Peak (5895m) will be awarded a gold certificate. Afterward, we drive back to Moshi for a well-deserved hot shower and a celebration of your accomplishment.
