Machame Route

The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” offers a tougher challenge than the Marangu Route but boasts a higher summit success rate due to its acclimatization strategy of "climb high, sleep low." The route includes steep sections, such as the Barranco Wall, but with proper preparation, it is manageable. The trek passes through forests, moors, and four distinct climatic zones, reaching the stunning Shira Plateau and Lava Tower before heading to the summit. With spectacular scenery, this moderately difficult route spans 61 km over 6 to 7 days, with an 85% success rate.

ITINERARY

DAY - 1

Airport pick-up- Drop off at Hotel

Tenebo Adventures staff will pick you up from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and drive you to your accommodation in Arusha. The  participants will receive a brief climb briefing The next day, and kits and equipment will be checked to ensure everything is in order for the trek.

DAY - 4

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp  (3900m)

We’ll start by scrambling over boulders and a few scattered rocks, then gradually ascend toward Lava Tower, where we’ll rest and enjoy lunch around midday. For the adventurous, there's an option to climb Lava Tower, standing at 14,850 ft (you may feel a mild headache as the altitude rises). Afterward, we’ll descend for about 2 hours along rugged, dusty trails, winding our way down to Barranco Camp at 13,000 ft, where we’ll settle in for the night.

DAY - 5

Barranco Camp -  Karanga Valley Camp (3995m)

We’ll begin by navigating up the Barranco Wall for about an hour and a half. This steep section requires using your hands to help steady yourself, similar to rock climbing, though not as difficult. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning view of the Barranco Valley and the campsite from the previous night. From there, we’ll traverse the rolling, green valley, which also marks the last water point on the mountain. This area is crucial for hydration before continuing the journey higher up.

DAY - 2

Arusha- Machame Hut Camp (3,000m)

After breakfast, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Arusha and drive for 1 hour to Machame Gate for registration. At the gate, you'll meet the rest of the crew, including cooks and porters, as we prepare for the climb. The hike begins through the rain forest and giant heathers, lasting approximately 6 hours until we reach our first overnight camp.

DAY - 3

Machame Hut Camp to Shira Camp (3,500m)

Although this day will be relatively short, the trail is steep, rocky, and dusty. The hike will be slow, with plenty of breaks to allow for acclimatization. The route is mostly barren, offering little shade from the sun’s heat. You’ll cross several ridges and encounter the first of many Senecias along the way.

DAY - 6

Karanga Valley Camp (3995m) –  Barafu Hut Camp (4673m)

Today’s hike will be a short but steep uphill climb across a barren landscape filled with boulders and shattered rocks. As we ascend, you'll catch sight of the Decken Glaciers on your left. We’ll continue along a very steep ridge before tackling a rocky section that requires some scrambling for about 1.5 hours. Our next camp will be set on large rocks near steep cliff faces, offering a dramatic setting. We’ll settle in early for the night, as we’ll need to wake up at 11:00 pm to prepare for the summit bid.

DAY - 7

Barafu Hut Camp (4328m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka Hut (3200m)

We’ll begin our climb around midnight, starting with a steep section of rocks for the first hour. Then, we’ll enter a snow-covered area, with glaciers looming above. If the night is moonlit, you can turn off your headlamp and continue by the soft moonlight, creating a truly magical experience. Over the next 2 hours, we’ll head towards Stella Point, taking a break every 15 minutes as the climb becomes both physically and mentally demanding.

Upon reaching Stella Point, the Lava fields will greet us with loose sand, making progress a bit frustrating yet rewarding. Every step forward seems to slide back, sometimes even two steps down if you’re not careful, making it feel like a battle against the terrain.

After a quick breakfast, we’ll make our final push to Uhuru Peak, a 1-hour ascent, timed perfectly to catch the sunrise over the Mawenzi Peaks. We’ll reach Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft) around 6-7 am, where you’ll enjoy the incredible view before beginning the descent. The way down is steep and strenuous, taking us back through Stella Point and down to mweka Hut Camp for some rest.

DAY - 8

Mweka Hut (3200m)  to Mweka Gate

Descend through the lush forest to Mweka Gate where We will check out and receive Kilimanjaro climbing certificate at the park gate office, then eat our lunch and say goodbye to our mountain staff. After lunch, we will drive through very beautiful coffee plantations and small villages of the Chaga people back to Arusha. There you will be dropped off and is the perfect time for you to take a nice swim, a hot shower, and a well-deserved celebration!
